I get asked this question a lot - What are probiotics? Lets explore ~
Did you know that bacteria can actually keep you extremely healthy? It all depends on the type of "bacteria" and today, we will be talking about "good bacteria" which are referred to as "probiotics"
Have you heard the term "sickness starts in the gut? This is true, having poor gut health can lead to SO MANY chronic conditions such as leaky gut, diabetes, inflammation, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune disorders, arthritis and more. Probiotics are known for the natural solution to gut health. They are the good bacteria that lines the digestive tract and helps the body's ability to absorb nutrients and fight infections. You see, if you have very poor gut health, no matter how many healthy foods you eat and no matter how many healthy supplements you are taking, all of these amazing things possibly will not digest and properly breakdown in the body correctly to be of benefit.. This is why it is very crucial to make sure your gut is the healthiest! After all, the gut makes up approximately 80% of our immune system.
Probiotics are live microorganisms found in the human gut and have been proven effective in supporting immune function, reducing inflammation, promoting healthy digestion as well as maintaining beautiful skin. Probiotics have been in our system from the day we were born, during delivery, the baby is exposed to bacteria of his/her mother for the first time. This starts a chain of events inside the baby's GI tract and the infants GI tract starts to produce good bacteria. Years ago, we had plenty of probiotics in our diets from eating fresh foods from good soil and also by fermenting the foods to keep them from spoiling. Today, since our crops are depleted and agricultural practices such as soaking the foods with chlorine, much of the foods contains very little probiotics. Many of the foods we are eating today contains "antibiotics" and this kills off the good bacteria in our gut.
Ways to get more probiotics in the system.
-Eat more sour foods such as fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut and kimchi, also apple cider vinegar, I typically add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in water each morning before starting my day.
-Eat high quality yogurt not made from conventional dairy, but from goat milk or coconut kefir.
-Take a high quality probiotic supplement. I normally make sure I'm taking at least 50 billion with minimum of 12 strains, also make sure to purchase from the refrigerated section in your health store and it should be free of dairy, soy, wheat, gluten, non GMO.
